Base Jumping
Base jumping at the Verbier Air Show is one of the event's most breathtaking moments. Athletes leap from the Mont Gelé cable car at 3,023 metres altitude, making it the highest organised base jump in the world. The setting is extraordinary: snow-capped peaks of the Valais Alps stretch in every direction, and the cable car suspended above the void provides a launch point unlike any other on earth.
The jumpers experience a few intense seconds of freefall before deploying their parachutes. At this altitude, conditions are demanding — wind speed, temperature and visibility must all be carefully assessed before every jump. Athletes have parachutes specially designed for rapid deployment, as the margin of error is minimal. Each jump is a precise balance of technical skill and risk management.
Among the confirmed athletes, Géraldine Fasnacht, a Swiss base jumping and wingsuit pioneer based in Verbier, takes part in the show. Known as The Bird Woman since her opening of the Matterhorn summit, she is an iconic figure in Alpine extreme sports. Other internationally renowned base jumpers such as Tim Howell, Dante Wardlaw, and Freddy Montigny known as 'Aladin', will join the event to deliver unforgettable jumps for the audience.
Base jumps are scheduled for Saturday 11 April between 10 AM and 3 PM from Mont Gelé. Spectators can watch from the slopes next to the 3023 restaurant or a dedicated area set up by Téléverbier at altitude. Binoculars are recommended for the best viewing experience. All jumps are weather-dependent and may be adjusted if conditions change.
